Dates: 31st Jan - 7th Feb 2021
Location: Doddanekundi (Ward 85)
Route length audited: 58.4 kms
Number of Cyclists who participated: 25
Summary: The ‘Handlebar Survey’ was kickstarted on a Sunday and conducted over a week to capture the cycling experience on Doddanekundi’s roads across peak and non-peak hours, at different times of the day. Based on the ITDP guide, the survey was further customised for Doddanekundi and captured both quantitative and qualitative aspects along the cycling routes, thus collecting comprehensive data from the cyclists. The map above indicates the issues captured during the survey.
The survey during non-peak hours was conducted on two Sunday mornings (31st Jan and 7th Feb) where cyclists in teams of 2-3 captured video footage (via GoPro cameras), mapped issues (via Google MyMaps) and captured images to support these issues (via Google Photos). Additionally each cyclist filled in an individual experience survey of their journey.
The survey during peak hours was conducted on Monday morning (1st Feb) and Friday evening (5th Feb) where individual cyclists cycled through the main network (primary and secondary) to capture video footage (via GoPro cameras), captured images of key issues (via Google Photos) and filled in an individual experience survey of their journey.
The day-wise details are listed below:
Sunday (31st Jan) | 7:30-9:30 am
Route Type: Low stress
Distance covered: 58.41 km (two-sides)
Type of cyclists: Experienced + Amateur
There were 11 loops developed with a mix of primary, secondary and tertiary routes, of which 7 were audited by 18 cyclists. Each team had one person using a GoPro Camera along with Strava to track their route; another person using Google MyMaps to drop a pin and describe issues and the third person clicking photographs of these issues (with geo-location on).
Monday (1st Feb) | 8:30-9:30 am
Route Type: High stress, peak hour traffic
Distance covered: 44.6 km (two-sides)
Type of cyclists: Experienced
During the morning peak hour traffic 6 loops consisting of only Primary routes were audited by one cyclist each. The aim of this was to just capture the experience of riding on high-traffic roads. Our cyclists only captured issues along their route through geo located photographs.
Friday (5th Feb) | 6:30-7:30 pm
Route Type: High stress, peak hour traffic
Distance covered: 74.46 km (two-sides)
Type of cyclists: Experienced
During the evening peak hour traffic 10 loops consisting of a combination of Primary and Secondary Routes were audited by one cyclist each. The aim of this was not only to capture the experience of riding through peak traffic but also to capture issues such as unlit zones, unsafe stretches, etc as geo-located photos.
Sunday (7th Feb) | 7:30-9:30 am
Route Type: Low stress
Distance covered: 27.91 km (two-sides)
Type of cyclists: Experienced + Amateur
On the last day, we covered 4 of the remaining loops with 8 cyclists in teams of 2. A similar exercise was followed as that of previous Sunday. The day culminated with the teams coming together to converse about their observations and put out their aspirations for a cycle-friendly Doddanekundi.
